Accord presents Discussion Paper on Removing Cosmetic Products and Ingredients from Industrial Chemicals Regulation, April 2016

Accord recently presented a paper Why Cosmetic reform is badly needed in Australia at the Australian Society of Cosmetic Chemists (ASCC) Annual Conference in Hobart Tasmania.  The presentation showcased the Discussion Paper commissioned by Accord to develop a range of options for removing cosmetics from the scope of the industrial chemicals regime.  Accord believes that the current regulatory scheme is inefficient and prohibits the timely introduction of new and innovative ingredients and products, and therefore reform is very welcome.  However despite the policy commitment to increased economic efficiency and productivity through better regulation, cosmetic ingredients are still being considered as part of the industrial chemicals regulatory framework, a scheme for which the objectives do not align with the low risk and global availability of these products as recognised elsewhere. This not only denies consumers access to new products and technology but dampens opportunities for local innovation and export markets. Accord is supporting a change to the regulation of these products more in line with their regulatory treatment by our major trading partners.
